First, I'd like to explain a few of the advantages of breathwork. Taking a breath is a bodily process that happens automatically and is often taken for granted. One's physical and mental well-being are both affected by how someone breathes. For example, shallow chest breathing is linked to increased worry and stress, while deep belly breathing is associated with decreased tension and greater calm.

Breathwork is another method for cultivating awareness and acceptance of the here and now. By bringing our awareness to our breathing, we are able to release our attachment to thoughts about the past or the future. Breathwork has the potential to enhance our happiness and joy by allowing us to become more in tune with our physical selves.

Physiological effects of Breathwork

Let's go further into the physiological effects of breathwork. Deep, steady belly breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which regulates the "rest and digest" response, our calm state of BEing. The sympathetic nervous system, which is in control of the "fight or flight" response, is somewhat neutralized by this activation.

With a reduction in heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels, the parasympathetic nervous system aids in relaxation and alleviates stress. Breathing this way has the ability to reduce stress and bring about a state of peace and calm to our nervous system.
